Make Thinking Visible

My students need dry erase tables to support collaborative group work, discussion, and thinking. We currently have too many old, broken, and rotting desks that are difficult to maintain.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are the most thoughtful, compassionate, and inquisitive humans I know. They study historical and current events consistently and persistently question, debate, discuss, predict, and communicate their knowledge, opinions, and conclusions in a variety of ways. They are always engaging in provocative conversations about the relationship between history and their lives and do not shy away from any question or topic.

I am in awe of my students.

The vast majority of my 100+ students live at or below the poverty line. While they enter class each day as seemingly normal, happy, and energetic teens, many of their families struggle to meet basic needs outside of school. Those needs include food, clothing, and school supplies. I often provide paper and writing utensils on a daily basis just to enable students to take notes.

They deserve more than what they have, including a bright and functional classroom space.

My Project

I teach history through the lens of current events and discussion of relevant, high-interest, and controversial topics. This approach calls for constant conversation and recording of ideas in service of a summative task. My project aims to enhance the classroom setting and foster deeper thinking.

By being able to sit in small group arrangements or to combine kidney tables for larger arrangements, students will better be able to discuss what we do in class and work collaboratively on worthy tasks.

Instead of worrying constantly about paper and graphic organizers for each conversation, groups can write or chart their discussion points, questions, and comparisons for all to see and approach and for teachers to better provide feedback and further questioning. The tables would truly promote a student-centered classroom.
