Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember getting boring black and white pictures of animals? Seeing flat images of the world around you? Then imagine the same images with bold vivid colors. My students need a color printer to make their work come to life.

My school is a small school in the South Bronx, the poorest urban Congressional district in the United States.

I work with a traditionally under served population. They don't have the advantages that other students in more upscale areas have. Many students can't afford the everyday supplies that most take for granted. However, just because they come from poverty does not mean they shouldn't be given the same opportunities. My students are hard working, dedicated, passionate, and they want to learn as much as they can. They just need the opportunity and the supplies to be able to fully engage with the material.

My Project

Once upon a time there was a lonely elephant named Billy. One day Mickey the Polar Bear decided to swim in the ocean. This year my students will be writing children's books to explain the ecosystems of various animals. They must explain how the animal survives, its adaptations for its environment, its prey, predators, where it fits in the food web etc. And like any good children's book, it must have illustrations. But picture that proud peacock in black and white. The poor polar bear swimming in a matte black ocean. Doesn't really capture the ecosystem or the animals. Writing books targeted for lower level students allows my highs school students to grasp the concepts by explaining them in their own words. I want my students to become proud authors of a classroom published book that they can share with others, and in order to do this, we need a color printer and ink cartridges.

While my students need a color printer for this specific project, it will be used through out the year.

When they research diseases, their paper can include color pictures. When they design science experiments they can investigate the question "Does gender play a role in color preference?" When studying the human body we can see the red blood cells in bright red. It will impact all areas of my science classroom and help the material come alive for my students.
