My Students

I teach a computer science and mathematics at a small inner-city high school. The introduction to computer science class is new for me and my school. The students had expressed such a high interest to learn computer programming that we knew we had to incorporate a course this year.

The computer science course has had a great start and my students and I are excited to get to work each day.

My students eagerly take on problem solving tasks and love to explore coding using our program. The only thing missing from the course is being able to print out their work. This would help them with note taking and allow them to explore their work even when they are not in front of a computer. I would also love to celebrate their work and display it all over our bulletin boards, but this is difficult without having a printer available in our classroom. My students currently submit and share their variations of codes through email and cloud services, but accessing the work can be time consuming due to slow Internet connections.

My Project

I am requesting a laser printer so that my students can easily print their work and share with each other. My computer science students will be able to analyze and comment on each others codes outside of class time, even when they don't have access to Internet. They can print their work to create tangible notes that they can reflect on over time and refer back to in order to help them through future tasks. Currently, we are pressed for time during class, since we work from laptops and my students must retrieve their computers, start up, and log in. A printer would help many of my lessons flow quickly and smoothly by having work already printed and accessible. My math students can benefit from a printer as well, since they often work on projects and would prefer print components of their project before assembling their work.

With your kind donations, I will be able to foster an environment where the learning process is seamless.

I will be able to avoid having students wait until a later time to find a printer to print their work. I am also requesting card stock paper, because many of my lessons involve creating tasks that require students to analyze and compare and contrast ideas. Students will be presented with different concepts on card stock paper and then work in groups to sort and investigate these ideas.
