My Students

My LARGE groups of 32 first grade students have a wide variety of mixed interests, abilities, and goals. Some of my students are learning to read and write, while others are hungry for more! I teach a first grade ESL class. The majority of students -English is their second language. They enjoy reading, art, writing, music and jokes! They all want a lot of attention and support but want to make progress in all areas. I do whatever possible to get books in their hands! Even sending my own books home with them!

My Project

The classroom library is an essential part of our classroom. As a first grade teacher, the job of teaching new readers is challenging, yet so rewarding! I do a lot of read alouds and incorporate a lot of my favorite children’s books. However students read independently in class every single day. Students go book shopping in our library each week and fill up their baggie with books on their level. Students choose these books themselves. So getting new, interesting, engagaing, and fun books will get them even more excited to read. I want to build a love of reading inside them that they can carry on forever. All of the books that I have chose, I believe will get them more excited to read. Students will be able to choose these books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. Most of my students do not have access to fun, interesting, leveled books at home. Most of them do not have someone to read with them at home. They come from non English speaking homes. School is where they will be exposed to reading. So let’s make it count !
