My Students

I work in Brooklyn with some great fifth graders. They come to us with learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral struggles. Our daily goal as teachers is to not only teach them new skills and concepts but it is to provide a safe and loving environment where they are challenged to be better people and pushed to reach their fullest potential. They spend the entire day in the classroom and so the classroom should be a warm and inviting environment....a place they love to come to everyday!

My Project

All of my students struggle with reading. Many of them don't enjoy sitting and reading a book because of their frustration. When I gather my kids on the carpet and read a book out loud to them, they are fully engaged, following along in their own books and even volunteer to read out loud.

There are not enough opportunities to read on their own and so our classroom would greatly benefit from a listening center with books on CD that are appropriate for their age.

The goal is to get them to feel comfortable with books and hopefully they will one day have the desire to read a book on their own and truly enjoy it!
