Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach Biology in a Title I school and I have a fantastic group of students who are very visual learners. Labs and other hands on activities are critical to understanding key concepts.

One important subject is cells, whether we are learning about own body cells or about other species such as prokaryotes or protists.

I want to help them see all the wonderful organisms that share our world with us but are too small to be seen with the human eye. I can tell them verbally that these other species exist and even show them pictures in a textbook but this does not make it real to them. Students learn when they see and do. I want my students to be able to prepare a wet mount slide and see living one celled organisms as they move. I want them to be able to use their phones and make videos of these organisms to share and use in projects. Bacteria and some other one celled organisms need a strong microscope with high magnification to be seen.

As a Title I school, we lack the funds to keep up with technology as it changes so quickly. Microscopes are a prime example. Our teachers share one set of microscopes and those microscopes are over twenty years old. They are not powerful and are not able to interface with other technologies such as phones. Newer microscopes are much more powerful with magnification up to 2000x, easily adapted to be used with phones, and have dual illumination. Please help me make the most of our inquiry driven labs by making it come alive for my students.
