My Students

This section asks to describe what makes my students special and I don't even know where to begin! My students come from a variety of different backgrounds. Some are newcomers from the Middle East, while some come from families where generations have attended the very school they are at now. I make sure to do everything possible to send my students out into the world as compassionate, tolerant individuals. The neighborhood I teach in is high poverty, but our school really tries to level the playing field for all students.

Each of my students is passionate about a number of different things and, as a teacher, I try to find ways to ignite that passion.

Not all of my students are excellent at math or reading, but they might love sports or technology. As a class, we enjoy coming up with ways to incorporate a little bit of ourselves into what we are learning.

My Project

I have been lucky enough to transform my entire classroom using flexible seating. One thing that we are still figuring out is how we can organize student materials when they have a different desk every day. Each student has a cardboard bin that they are using, but they have already been "maxed" out by the fourth week of school. We would love to purchase better quality materials to help us keep everything more organized in the classroom.

Having heavy-duty, plastic book bins for students to keep all of their materials organized throughout the day will lead to easier and smoother transitions between subjects and seats.

My students are enjoying being able to choose different seats around the classroom that help them become more productive and successful, but a challenge has been organizing their materials. The current cardboard bins fall over and are already starting to rip. Rather than have materials that make things more difficult for students, I would like to be able to use the plastic bins to keep them more organized so they are not distracted and worrying about their books and notebooks falling over or spilling out of their bin throughout the day.
