NO art supplies = NO autobiographies for ESL Students. Help some sweet and bright ESL students learn English and develop self-confidence!

The last time I taught a fairy tales course to ESL high school students, their grades soared and so did their motivation for English. This time, they are going to create autobiographies and I've got the writing part covered, but I need help with the decoration. Our school has a limited budget, especially when it comes to art supplies. I know this project is going to be powerful because it is an original, not run-of-the-mill, autobiography. Students will learn perspective and take ethnographic notes and field work of a family member and write their autobiography. Not only that, but students will read their autobiography to their family member at an open house at school. Not only is this groundbreaking for a high school, but students really are going to want to make their project perfect for that special someone. We all know that delivery is extremely important, especially in delicate situations like this. Not having any art supplies is going to make the kids feel less confident about the project and be less willing to share it. I want this to be an educational experience as well as a growth experience for students to be able to tackle hard situations when faced with them.

The resources that are necessary are all types of scrapbook materials. With a class of 25-30, I know that I will need markers, colored pencils, fancy paper, scissors and other scrapbook supplies. I want to be able to provide students with as many options as possible so that each autobiography can be individualized and unique. Part of expeditionary learning (what our school stands for) is the ability to be original and authentic, but we need options for that to take place. This project will provide a population (ESL) who unfortunately is usually forgotten about, to feel empowered, worthy, and be able to show off their creative side, which I know they possess.

Our school is a high-needs school in the inner city that loses funding every year since I have been there. I want to continue to provide my kids with suburban quality education but on limited resources, we are falling behind. You are making it possible for us to compete with those who already have materials. Not knowing English in America can be a handicap, but my job is to give students the tools they need to compete in this world. Your donation will ensure that my students don't lose motivation which is the number one factor (studies have shown) in acquiring a new language. My students will not know how to thank you enough, but I know the look on their proud faces will say it all when they are able to show pride in their work and share the most intimate parts of themselves with a family member. Please help them have the confidence to both show up and confront their biggest fear by donating to this project.
