Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Hobbies are often overlooked in the school setting, but studies show that people who have hobbies are more likely to manage anxiety and depression better than those who don't have hobbies. Additionally, having a hobby can enhance well-being and improve social connections. I'd like to give my students a variety of experiences (rock painting, candle making, soap making, jewelry making, drawing, and more) to help them develop skills to give them a sense of pride in themselves. Students who have skills that they're proud of are more likely to have higher self-esteem than those who don't develop skills and hobbies.

My goal is to have regular "hobby days" where students can develop skills that can lead to a lifetime of health and wellness.

I can use the prize wheel to choose which hobby we'll be working on or as a way to reward students who are on task with their hobby, among other things.

Students who are trans, non-binary, on the spectrum, or gay often feel left out of mainstream classes or don't feel seen: providing students with a new skill or hobby will help them develop their self-esteem and give them something to be proud of. It's important to give students a lot of choices so they can find the skills that resonate with them. Thanks for partnering with me to support ALL of my students!
