Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

On a typical day in my classroom, my students will be working on any number of projects. We have class assignments to work on every single day but also contest entries, special projects and school decorations to create. My classroom is a busy place.

My students come from low socioeconomic households.

Our school is ninety-five percent free or reduced price lunch. We have an Art Magnet program at our school that requires an audition to enroll. Many of my students come to school early so that they can work on their classwork or work on special projects. During this time, I let them try out new materials or propose ideas for new projects. My students are never satisfied with good enough. They are always trying to learn new techniques that will improve their skills. For many of my students, art is the one place where they can excel and make their voices heard. The work that my students create has been recognized locally and nationally. I want my students to be proud of the work that they produce. By entering contests and exhibitions, my students have a chance to be recognized for their hard work and creativity.

My Project

These materials will be used by my students and I to learn about a wide variety of artistic topics and improve our art studio. I am requesting many different types of acrylic paints. Painting is especially popular with my middle school students. At this level of artistic development it is important for students to have varied opportunities to work and experiment with paint. Being able to have many opportunities to paint allows students to experience success and learn from failures. My students will use the acrylic paints to learn about color-mixing, techniques like blending, and make landscape and self-portrait paintings.

Everyone knows that materials are what keeps an art class going.

This is especially true in our art studio where I teach 8 different groups, most of those are over 30 students. All of those students coming in and out each day also takes its toll on our studio. I am requesting tennis balls to cover the legs on our chairs. This will prevent the floor from scratching and staining easily.

Other items I have requested such as bingo daubers, paint brushes, tempera cakes and frames will be used in conjunction with materials we already have. Art-making uses up many materials, these materials will be used to make complete class sets so that every student is able to work with them.
