I currently teach special education literacy to freshman in a high-needs high school in an urban setting.

My students have a hard time reading and will only do so if the story they are reading is interesting. I have decided to begin the critically acclaimed book "Monster" because unfortunately my students are all too familiar with the subject of the story. The story begins will a young black male who is on trial for murder. I believe my students will be able to relate to the characters and their story.

I need 20 copies of "Monster." "Monster" is rich with many literacy devices and many components of literacy can be taught from it. It can also be used to assist my students to be more conscience readers. Becoming conscience reader will help them pass State exams that will assist them in entering a four-year college, which otherwise would be unavailable to them.
