I am a first year NYC Teaching Fellow, and I teach 2nd grade in a portable classroom at PS 202 in East NY. All 17 of my students receive free school lunch. One of my main goals as a teacher is to open up the world to my students. I want my students to know that there is a world beyond East New York. It sounds basic, but I've discovered that many of my students knew hardly anything about New York City. Most of the children's parents work long hours, and don't have much money available for leisure activities; leaving the children with not much of an opportunity to get out of their neighborhood and experience new things. I came to this realization early in the year and decided to do something about it. I started compiling free kid-friendly events from Time Out NY and New York Magazine, and making up a weekly one sheet flyer for parents with free events going on around town. A good number of my kids were taken to some of the events, but a good number of them weren't, and are not going to be taken anywhere in the future, due to either time or money constraints. I also decided to make a whole unit out of New York City. Topics covered included the boroughs, skyscrapers, parks, transportation, famous places, people, bridges, etc. I did some research and found a great book entitled "My New York: New Anniversary Edition" by Kathy Jakobsen which I purchased myself, and that kind of guided our unit. The children absolutely love the intricate and colorful drawings, the enjoyable text, and the fact that they can really go see the things that they are reading about. It is now part of our independent reading library and is very often borrowed and taken home by the children. I would love for each of my children to be able to have a copy of "My New York" of their very own. I strongly believe that if children know what is available to them, what is just a quick subway ride away, they will be able to make better choices as young adults. Because of this book, my kids know the Empire State Building, and when they see it, they tell me what color the light was when they saw it. They know the Intrepid, The Museum of Natural History (or the dinosaur museum as they call it), China Town, Rockefeller Center, Madison Square Garden, and their absolute favorite (to my surprise!), The Flatiron Building. Because I truly believe that learning about NYC has and will continue to positively enhance the lives of my students, I am asking for 17 copies of "My New York: New Anniversary Edition", by Kathy Jakobsen, one for each child in the class. The books will be for the kids to keep, and to share with friends and siblings. I believe that the benefits of this donation will be extensive and ongoing. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
