My Students

Did you ever struggle with math as a child? I know I did, and I didn't have the added challenge of being diagnosed with autism, which is the case for my students. My students are in middle school and we are preparing them to enter the real world. They need to know how to handle money and tell time!

I teach a class of energetic pre-teens who are loving and full of life, and also happen to be diagnosed with severe autism.

Regardless of their disability, my students come to school every day ready to learn and get the most out of the day as they can. All of my students come from high poverty areas, and while they have amazing parents and guardians, their parents can't afford to provide their kids with all the necessary learning materials they would like to. My students deserve to have access to high quality resources and a donor like you can help provide these resources. Many of my students have no vocal language, while others speak in 1-2 word phrases. It's difficult for my students to understand abstract concepts, which is why hands-on materials are essential for ensuring their success, especially when it comes to math. These kids love to learn and are some of the most resilient people I've met. I want to continue to foster their love for school and math for years to come.

My Project

My students need money games, puzzles, and activity stations, and time discovery activities to help with the functional math skills. The ways my students will use these materials are endless! As middle school students, I'm already preparing my students for high school and beyond. The goal we have for all of our students is independence. This looks different for different students, but at the end of the day we want our students to function as independently as they can once they graduate high school. In order to gain independence, I need to begin teaching my students important life skills now. I also need to teach them job readiness skills. Learning how to handle money and how to tell time are two of the most important life skills a person can learn. These concepts are a part of our everyday lives. However, for my students, these abstract concepts can be tough to grasp. These hands-on learning materials will help make these abstract concepts more concrete. If my students are able to make sense of money and telling time, their chances for obtaining a job and thus becoming independent greatly increase!

When my students graduate high school they belong in jobs that they love and they will be successful at.

They belong taking your order at a local fast food restaurant, or checking you out at your favorite clothing store. In order to achieve this goal, they need to learn how to handle money and tell time right now. By getting my students comfortable with counting coins, making change, and telling time at the age of 10, by the time they are 21 they will be ready to confidently take on the world!
