My students come from a wide range of backgrounds. I teach at a Title I-funded school where the majority of the students are economically disadvantaged. Many of them are from single-parent families, multiple families living in the same home, and even foster homes.
No matter their background, it is important for me to give my students the best educational experience I possibly can.
Even though my students come from rough backgrounds they truly want to learn and to be challenged academically. Their tenacity for more drives my desire to give them a rigorous education that goes beyond paper and pencil passages.
My Project
Just like me, educators all over are getting ready for a year full of challenges like we have never seen before. Were my students able to attend school regularly? If they were virtual, how much learning occurred? Are they emotionally ready for coming back to school? If teachers are stressed imagine how students are feeling. That is why it is important for me to think about how students are doing not only academically but also emotionally, and to find ways to inject joy into my lessons
Happy students are also motivated ones.
One idea I have for adding joy to my lessons is to have weekly "glow parties". These types of parties require black lights and lots of glow-in-the-dark materials to make it fun!! During these parties, students will work on skills and concepts that they may be lacking due to COVID-19 or whatever reason. It is my hope that these glow parties offer some lightness and fun to my lessons, and I believe will contribute to student motivation and participation.
