Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I currently teach third graders at a title one school in North Charleston, South Carolina. I have 17 very eager to learn students! A large majority of our school population is Spanish Speaking. Out of 17 students, I currently have 8 who primarily speak Spanish. My students LOVE math. They love to learn about new ideas, problem solving, and attempt to solve any problems I give them. As I mentioned, they are very eager to learn! Unfortunately, I do not currently have the resources in my classroom to teach math to them using a "hands on" approach. The majority of the manipulatives I have were purchased by me, and the others in the classroom are very old and barely usable. My students biggest struggle with learning new ideas is that they do not always retain the new knowledge. I believe that by providing "hands on" instruction, especially in Math, it enables the students to gain the knowledge they need to retain new information. My students would benefit from being able to use math manipulatives during instruction. By doing this, they will gain a deeper understanding of the concepts, retain the knowledge, and be better prepared for the fourth grade. I would like to get a Math Manipulative Kit and a Telling Time Kit for my class to use. I feel it is especially beneficial for my ESOL students. I cannot imagine how hard it is for them to learn a new concept in a new language. By using manipulatives, they will gain a deeper understanding of what I am teaching. You can help boost the math skills of these wonderful third graders, and prepare them for the future!
