My Students

What my Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing, middle-school-students lack in HEARING, they make up for with HARD WORK, and HEART! These exceptional students live and learn in New York City. In a world dominated by sound, most children learn new vocabulary and language by overhearing them in conversations that interest them. This is why Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, my students, must work so much harder to learn about things that other children pick up incidentally. They are at a disadvantage in the hearing world when it comes to language.

My Project

My middle school Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing students relate to the world visually and learn the best when the subject is brought to life. Like many D/HH students, they struggle with language as they have difficulty with the phonemic/auditory skills required to both learn an oral language and decode written language. This struggle follows them beyond ELA and into the 'real-world' problems they must solve in math and science.

Interactive notebooks personalize and differentiate learning; help students study and learn at the same time; help students make sense of the material as they interact with the subject matter; create a more visual format that engages students more than just standard note-taking.

The interactive notebook and word walls that will be purchased with these TPT gift cards will provide a much-needed resource for students that is not available through the standard curriculum available in their Queens, NY school.
