Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is a place where students discover who they are. The underlying theme in every activity is "identity." Through art, I want my 9th graders to discover who they are, cultivate an artistic identity, and be proud of themselves and learn to respect others.

My students are extremely curious.

They see something and want to know how it works, and then get their hands on it and learn how to use it themselves. They are constantly searching for new journeys in art, whether it be painting, pottery, sculpture, woodworking, or collage. My students come from a diverse ethnical background in a great neighborhood in Brooklyn where you can see the statue of liberty from the street. The neighborhood is one of the last remaining true working class neighborhoods in New York, and my students come to school with great curiosity and appetite for art. Many of them haven't had much experience with art but love drawing and doodling in their notebooks. I believe it is my responsibility to expose them to as many different materials and artistic styles as possible so that they can discover and cultivate their own artistic identity.

My Project

We are requesting plywood, dovetail saws, and table clamps. Many of my students want to learn how things are made, and are enamored by the idea of using tools such as saws and hammers, so I started a woodworking afterschool program. This program is new for the school, so there weren't any materials to use. I have been bringing in my own tools and spend my own money to get my students the wood and materials they need. Through woodworking, I am trying to teach my students that anything can be made. In a disposable-consumerist age where things are bought, broken, thrown-out and replaced, I want to teach my students there is a virtue in creating your own box, chair, shelf, or anything else they can think of. The first project they have to accomplish is making a box that has a lid. Through this activity I want them to learn the basic skills needed for woodworking, and also learn how to respect tools and materials.

Many of my students will go on to college, and many will find a job in this neighborhood.

Regardless of their future, I want all of my students to learn the virtue of making something with their own hands and understand that hands-on physical labor is a beautiful process that can enrich their lives. I want my students to feel the excitement of cutting wood and making a box to put their precious items in. And most importantly, I want my students to have fun and be proud of themselves.
