My Students

My elementary students need to be motivated to use the library more. By adding puzzles and games, more students are excited about the library. It is my goal to create a Maker Space so that even more students will see the library as more than a place for books.

Our school is a Title I school.

About 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Because of budget cuts, our school only has music for half of the school year and art for one fourth of the school year. I would like to expose the students to science, technology, engineering, art, and math as much as possible. The school is one of the oldest schools in our county. It is spread out between three buildings. That is one reason that the library is not used so much. It is not centrally located and it is in a separate building. Our school recently exited the School of Transformation because the students met expected growth for the first time in a few years. My fixed/flexible schedule will make it possible for students to use the library to explore.

My Project

With the Maker Space materials, snap circuits, Makey Makey, Osmo and Ozobots, our students will be able to create, explore, discover, construct, question, and so much more. Students will build creative thinking, critical thinking, and problem solving skills. They will be able to work independently and have choices about what to do. This will motivate the students to use the library, and hopefully improve attendance and academic success. My vision is for students to be curious and take charge of their own learning. A few classrooms have embraced STEAM, but I feel that all students should have the opportunity to explore the components on STEAM.

Although test scores matter, student success is more important.

A student who enjoys learning will be more successful. With the support of generous donors, our students will enjoy exploring, creating, and learning with the Maker Space materials. The students will be able to apply their skills to academics, recreation, and other real world situations.
