This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For many students, the transition from middle school to high school is a difficult one. In order to be successful academically, they need to practice comprehension strategies for the more rigorous texts we use. Conversely, they cannot write in the books. Post-its to the rescue!

My students live in the heart of the South Bronx with an 80% poverty rate.

Most of my students have parents who never completed high school, let alone read to them as children. Despite all the challenges they face, they are eager learners and want to succeed in life. Our high school is modeled around a college-bound theme, and they take two years of college prep classes. Unfortunately, though, the majority of our students arrive reading below grade level and some far below.

My Project

To successfully comprehend grade level texts, they need to practice reading strategies and annotating texts. If they can successful learn these skills, it will not only help them in their English classes but across the curriculum. Since they cannot write in the actual book, post-its provide an essential role. They allow students to develop their critical thinking and for me to monitor their comprehension. Some of the areas we will focus on are text features, vocabulary, questioning, summary, and analyzing arguments. My students need color post-it notes, post-it flags, large lined post-its, and highlighter tape with refills.

My students need to practice comprehension strategies and annotating texts not only to help them be successful in high school but to prepare them for the college level readings they will one day face.
