My Project

Learning new behaviors and social skills empowers my students, with confidence, to navigate their world at school, home, in their community and beyond. I work on a team of behavior support teachers who travel to schools supporting students, teachers and staff to teach new behaviors and social skills, understand and process emotions effectively and manage sensory needs. Many of my students are in Special Education with a wide range of disabilities (mild, moderate, severe) in all types of classrooms and grades K-12 within Los Angeles.

My project will help my students build new skills around concepts like personal space, reading social cues, playing with friends, transitioning to different activities, recognizing emotions, self awareness and management and much more.

The iPad, case, and Apple pencil will allow my students to watch and interact with virtual social stories and social emotional games. This technology will even allow students to make personalized social stories of their own. The ease of the iPad, being able to travel, allows me to dedicate a piece of technology to this in order to reach more students.

My students will use social books and cards in my project to practice the social skills they have learned in fun ways and interact with other students with and without disabilities.

All the fidget toys in my project will assist my students with focus in class! They provide an outlet for sensory needs to concentrate on learning while providing the input their bodies need to stay calm and focus. The range of different fidget toys will allow me to personalize for each student for how they fidget like squeezing, rotating, tapping, rubbing different textures, etc.
