My students need to experience history; one way is to read literature that brings history to life. Schindler's List (12 copies) is one book that conveys the Holocaust during WWII. They also need 12 student packs of "Grapes of Wrath" to help them truly understand the kind of life that took place in history.

My Students

Did you see the movie, Schindler's List? Did you read the book? Perhaps you read the Grapes of Wrath in High School? Do you remember how you felt? The images conveyed in the book brought history to life. Through these books our students will have the same experience.

Our School is a rural public school in West Virginia with about 40% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch.

The School has students in grades 9-12 and is shock full of spirit; the students wear club t-shirts or athletic gear any day of the week, not just on Spirit Fridays. The students appreciate what they do have and do not take anything for granted. M. students, like any high school students, learn best when they are engaged; these books will keep them riveted.

My Project

Reading Schindler's List and the Grapes of Wrath our students will experience history first hand. Both books portrait vividly the events of the period in a way unlike any history text. The students will read the books, discuss the events, and compare these with the descriptions in their history texts. The Dust Bowl and the Holocaust will have new meaning for these students. Anytime they hear these terms, the images from the books will come to mind. Whenever I hear the Dust Bowl or the Grapes of Wrath, the scene from the book where the woman nurses the starving man comes to mind. When I think of Schindler's List, the image of the children hiding in the toilets to evade another round-up is etched in my conscious. My students should have that experience and should learn that the history on the pages represent real people facing real crises.

Books make such a difference.

Reading is so important, our School devotes a day each month to sustained reading. The experience of reading history, rather than a lecture or a video makes the events real. Think about your favorite book and how that changed your view point. That is the experience we want for our students.
