My Project

Our FIRST LEGO Robotics team, the only elementary team in our large, urban, district, sailed through their qualifying event and will be competing in a regional competition in three weeks. This is the first time our team has ever advanced to the next round, and we are studying the rubrics from our judges. There are four part of the competition: Project, Robot Design, Robot Performance and Core Values. The entire goal of FIRST Robotics is to teach students life skills that will make them successful. Sharing and Impact are embedded throughout the program and are also large parts of the project. This year, students are to share their love of a hobby and ours have chosen crochet.

To impact others, they must create something that represents their project to share with the other robotics teams.

They would like to make Learn to Crochet kits with yarn, instructions and materials to teach how to crochet a phone lanyard. Students would assemble the crochet kits over the winter break and share them at our competition on January 13th. They will benefit from learning how to explain their project step-by-step. They will also be teaching other students during the tournament, increasing public speaking and self-confidence.Our judges remarked that when the team showed how we used pseudo code and code to create our crochet projects, we were engineering and using technology, "turning crochet into a universal language." The team would use this yarn to continue to teach others the similarities between coding and crochet while increasing the impact of their project.
