My Students

I am a 4th and 5th Grade English Language Arts and Math teacher. Our school does looping so we have the privilege to stay with the same students for two years in a row. I teach roughly 60-75 students each school year. My students come to school sharing their many different cultural backgrounds and experiences.

My students come from a variety of economic levels.

Our school is an intermediate public school (only 4th and 5th grade). Therefore, we have a wide variety of students from the entire city. Our population is middle class working families with roughly 60% of students qualify for free and reduced lunches. We also have a large amount of students with ADHD and Special Education. These students seem to learn best by moving around the classroom during math activities and finding a a cozy, comfortable place to read. We need more seating in the classroom to help meet all of the students needs for them to be successful everyday.

My Project

My students need comfortable seating to encourage them to use our "new" and improved reading corner. We are well on our way to creating a warm, inviting place for students to read, but we need a few more pieces!

If you have ever tried to enjoy a book in a classic student desk/chair combination then you know how uncomfortable it is!

Like any skill, students need practice to improve their reading.

Please help us get book shelves that will be transformed into a bench for students to sit or lay on while they read, a rug so students do not have to sit on the hard floor, book crates so students can find a book easier and throw pillows to make it feel more like home to help encourage this necessary reading practice. With a comfortable place to read, my students will grow their reading skills.
