Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a great bunch. It's always a mix of abilities and personalities. As a teacher, you'll get students who are overachievers, can-doers, and the less than ambitious kind. Regardless of the students' caliber, a teacher always asks the best out of them. This is why teaching art is a great way for all students to show what they can do.

My students come from a community that has one of the highest poverty levels and almost 100% of my students qualify for free or reduced-rate lunches.

I also have a large ESL presence, which makes teaching a bit more difficult. My students push through many obstacles and many times endure broken air conditioners and lack of funds for proper materials.

My students are not fancy, overbearing, or have a chip on their shoulders. They have a willingness to try and do their best regardless of their socioeconomic status. My students have a funny way of thinking about things. One example is when students who do remarkably well think their work is subpar. This is when I say their work is beautiful. They disagree and keep working on it and sometimes start over.

My Project

Art always ends up being a consumable situation. For another project I have requested air compressors and airbrush guns. In this case it will be markers that will be consumed. I have chosen black and red because they are some of the most effective colors to use when making stencil art. Black can be used as a means to to enhance shadows when something misty is warranted. The markers will be used with the Copic marker air brush system and would be the part that will be consumed. The markers will be used to create works of art by making stencil art. Students are going to design portraits and will cut them out of transparency sheets and the use the markers to spray color to create their stencil art portraits.
