Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine a place in the school where children can learn through play and exploration. Where simple materials like Tinker Toys and more complex electronics like Little Bits can be used to create products that exceed our own imaginations. This is the place I will create with these maker space materials.

I have the privilege of working as a librarian with the students and teachers at a Title I school that serves motivated children from low-income, immigrant families.

Our dedicated teachers work hard to create a learning environment that is rigorous and relevant but don't always have the time to incorporate hands-on projects that require creativity as students engage in academic materials.

My Project

Our entire student body (K-4th graders) will use the maker space through out the school year in large or small group settings. As librarian, I will oversee the instruction in the maker space and will utilize these materials to motivate students to pursue math and science activities. I will also host a maker space club which will create projects to enter into the InfyMaker Awards competition. The Tinker Toy set, Makey Makeys, and Little Bits set will be used for students to explore how construction, electricity, and simple coding can be combined to create grand products that only the imagination of a child could fathom.

This project will make a huge difference in the lives of our students.

With high stakes testing classroom teachers don't have as many opportunities to have students lead their own learning in creative and discovery based environments. The maker space will provide this space for all students.
