As a teacher, I believe that keeping kids engaged in learning is exceptionally important. Last year, I taught upper-grade literacy for the first time and quickly learned what kids are excited about.
I hope to implement these ideas in my classroom this year through utilizing picture books during our science block in a cohesive, thematic unit.
Let me give you an example of what I would like to do. One of the 4th grade science standards asks students to understand animal adaptations. For a lesson, our class would read a book about ducks that is high-rigor and high engagement (like the ones I've requested in this donation!). During the read, we would discuss skills we are using to understand the story (inferring, visualizing, etc.). Then, we would pause and do an experiment to discover how ducks keep oil out of their feathers. After completing the experiment, students would summarize in writing what they have learned.
Besides being engaging, this type of learning is backed by research (Science of Reading). Having these books is important because I want to foster a genuine love of learning in my students. I am only able to do these types of integrated lessons if I have the content-specific books to make it happen.
The books I am requesting in this project are all picture books that relate to a different aspect of the 4th Grade Science Core (energy, waves, space, animal adaptations/systems, fossils, rocks). They will be used in lessons and also be available in our class library!
My students really are the sweetest, most amazing kids and they deserve to have a school experience that excites them to learn.
