My students need a variety of mythology books to build their understanding of the teachings that belong to the ancient Greeks, concerning their gods and heroes.

My students come to school with a strong desire to learn and achieve their very best.
They are sweet, smart, and hard working. They are active participants in their own education. As a magnet school, we have a diverse student body. We focus on creating pride and passion for achievement and to always transform obstacles into opportunities. This focus allows our diverse group of students the opportunity to develop skills and character needed to be responsible, respectful, and productive citizens in the global community.
My Project
This year my students will be reading the "The Lightning Thief." This fantasy-adventure based novel is based on Greek mythology. Unfortunately, my students come to school with little background or understanding about Greek myths. My goal is to build a classroom library of mythology books for my students to access after I teach a concept or give a book talk to learn more about a particular god or myth. It will also allow my students to make connections from "The Lightning Thief" to the old Greek myths.
A collection of books would be a valuable gift for my students.
In addition, I am requesting multiple copies of "Tales from the Odyssey" and "Hercules" to use for reading instruction through a literature circle model. This model is a book club where each student is given a role to be an expert on the assigned chapter. Students will then meet as a group to discuss their findings and dive deeper into the message or theme of each book. Our focus will be the hero's journey and locating each step throughout the book. Many of my students see reading as an independent activity where their adventures and learning from a book remains with only them. These books will allow students to see that reading can be shared, discussed, and enjoyed with their peers.
These books will provide my students with the necessary life skills of being prepared and organized. In addition it will improve their oral speaking skills and build their confidence as each week they will become an expert on a specific story element of the text.
