My Students

My students are from Brooklyn. They come from diverse backgrounds and are enthusiastic about new experiences. They especially love science and are curious about the environment around them. While we would love to explore the rocks and minerals near our beach, it is not always practical. Therefore, we want to get a supply to bring to our classroom. It would be awesome to explore rocks, minerals, shells and gems in a safe environment so we could examine their properties and learn about the rock cycle as it relates to our geographic area.

My Project

My "Magnificent Minerals" project will provide my students with the necessary tools to examine, analyze and classify different minerals and rocks just as a real geologist would. With your help, I can purchase a comprehensive rocks and minerals kit that can supplement the myriad books our classroom already has on the subject. But students are, by nature, curious. They are discoverers, inquisitors, explorers. So, acquiring a beautiful new minerals, rocks and gems set will allow me to teach interactive, interdisciplinary lessons that will incorporate the resources in the science set.

I can't wait to see the students busily finding out information based on their tests, experiments and discoveries.

They will then cross-reference that data on websites they look up on laptops they will use. Their culminating activity will include a trip to the Queens Science Center to celebrate their hard work!
