Hands-on learners looking for supplies!! We are a 5th grade class of 16 students at a small Charter School!

In 5th grade, it is expected that we focus intensely on science in the classroom in order to prepare for the state testing. Unfortunately, since testing in science is only done in the 5th grade at this time, other grades do not see the importance of teaching basic concepts. Therefore, we spend a lot of time catching up and moving forward. In order to generate excitement and inspire a love of science, I do a lot of hands-on activities. These activities provide students personal experiences needed to make connections. They can explain and write about ideas much better if they have had first hand experience. At our school, we have no budget for science supplies and access to a very limited amount of science resources that must be shared among all teachers (which does not include any magnets).

Magnetism is a concept that students find fascinating, but they don't really understand why things work. Reading about it does not create the excitement needed to generate curiosity or retention of the vocabulary. Students tend to think because something is shiny that it will be magnetic and do not understand the idea of polarity beyond knowing that the north and south pole exist. Giving the students the opportunity to manipulate magnets in situations that I set up will provide them with a better understanding of basic concepts and the retention needed to explain what was learned. That explanation is key to knowledge.

Hands-on science is a way to inspire children to learn. Your help will make it possible for my students (this year and for years to come) to not only read about magnetism, but to make science come alive and allow them to explore first-hand!
