My students need various magnetic math manipulatives that are easily visible when placed on the front board. These manipulatices include a teaching clock, magnetic big money, Giant Magnetic Pattern Blocks, Giant Magnetic Fraction Circles & Bars, Giant Magnetic Place Value Blocks, Magnetic Display Shelves, a number line, a Regrouping Activity Chart, and a tub of Math Dice.

Let's end the stereotype that inner city schools can't compete with suburban schools! All students are capable. My second graders can and will grow up to become smart, valued citizens of their community. One way to attain this goal is to give my students the basic skills needed drive them to next step in their academic career. The need for students to be able to do more than memorize math facts is apparent. I want my students to be able to understand the how and why of mathematics in order to help them to move on to higher level mathematical thinking.
With only 65% of the budget of the public school up the street, our charter school lacks the funds to provide students with materials to engage them in learning. Coming from homes with two working parents, these students are not always able to receive help once they leave the school building. Therefore, I must make sure that not a moment is wasted, that every resource is utilized while they are with me.
With magnetic math tools, I will be able to use both of my magnetic blackboards to reach my students with a colorful approach to math. The students need to see fractions broken into parts that form a whole. They need to be able to move the magnetic pieces to tell time, add and subtract numbers, regroup numbers, and add money. I plan to use the dice to play math games with the students. Not only are dice an endless resource for fun math games, but they will help the students to work together in pairs and teams. There is nothing more rewarding than watching a student's face illuminate when they realize why regrouping is necessary and how a fraction is a part of a whole.
Thank you in advance for viewing my proposal. Rest assured that your donation will empower inner city students whose futures depend on their school life. Let's work together to make it possible and probable that these student's will become smart and valued citizens.
