My Students

More than 75 percent of my second grade students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Questioning if you are able to have a proper meal is a situation that many people never experience in a lifetime. This is a daily struggle for many of my students and they are only 7 and 8 years old. Regardless of this, they come to school each day with a smile and a willingness to learn.

Finances are not the only hindrance that my students face either; one-third of my students are learning English as a second language.

They tackle the obvious challenges that accompany a language barrier with incredible perseverance! Their grit, positive outlook, and love for learning inspires me every day. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to be a part of their lives.

My Project

As a second grade teacher in a Title 1 school, it is my number one goal to provide my students with learning experiences that make them feel successful and confident. These magnet letters, magnetic white boards, and whiteboard markers will provide my students with an opportunity to build and break words in an independent and engaging way. The stop-watch timers and dry erase sleeves will allow me to establish a reading fluency station for students to practice reading smoothly while maintaining appropriate speed. It is evident that these structured activities are crucial to building a strong phonetic and fluency foundation. Without these fundamental skills, students will struggle in later years.

Because I teach in such a diverse school, many of my second grade students are reading at a kindergarten level while others read above grade level.

I have selected resources that will allow me to easily differentiate instruction and meet my students' needs in entirety.
