My Students

My students are mad about magnets. Please help me create a fun and inviting magnet center in our classroom!

My transitional kindergarten students are just turning 5 years old.

At this age, they are developing social skills and learning to get along with others in a positive way. This year's group is exceptionally creative. I would love to create a discovery center in our classroom where they could go and work together in a fun and creative way. TK is a new grade for the state of California. The children are four years old when they enter school, and turn 5 in the middle of the year. At this age, they learn to work together in a cooperative way towards a common goal. They learn manners and rules for good citizenship. These skills are important for future school success.

My Project

Playing with magnets involves hands-on learning, fosters conversation and encourages children to make predictions. I envision a center stocked with a variety of magnets. We already have letters, and a magnetic roller coaster set. The items requested in this project include a cart with a double sided magnetic board, magnetic gears, and magnet shapes. Because the cart is double sided, as many as 6 students can work together. They can create pictures, practice spelling their sight words, and have fun connecting the gears and roller coasters in different ways. I have also asked for a set of small backpacks to use to store books and other items for student use at home.
