Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach on the southwest side of Chicago. Most of my students come from low income families. The everyday items we take for granted many times are luxuries for my students, such as books, pens and hyenine supplies. For this project, I am focusing specifically on books. I teach ELA and promote reading for pleasure everyday. I have books at their disposal since many do not have extra funds to buy their own. I have a large library but the students have specifically asked for magna titles. I want to make sure I have books that keep my students interested which will lead to a love of reading.

My Project

Magna mania has taken over my ELA classroom! Each day my students enter my room and read silently for 15 minutes. This daily habit is to help promote life long readers who read simply for pleasure. I have spent years building up my classroom library with high-interest novels to suit my students interests and reading level individually. This year my students are begging for magna anime. They hand selected the titles listed below. I am thrilled that they actually want to read and are sharing this new genre not only with me, but other students as well.
