Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 5th grade students are eager learners with diverse cultural backgrounds. Many of my students are English language learners who bring enthusiasm and curiosity to every task, even the challenging ones. I work with many newcomers to the United States who have endured great obstacles to be here. It humbles me to see how much they value education and how they strive to succeed in a new land, language, and culture.

We perceive diversity as a strength to be harnessed and nurtured.

In my classroom, we often design lessons and activities around an inquiry model, so that all students are exposed to rigor, but at the same time can access content in meaningful ways.

At our school, we believe that a collaboration of families, teachers, and students is what makes our community resilient. We are always learning and evolving in our practices.

My Project

Our students will be beginning a Fantasy reading and writing unit in the coming months. To raise student engagement and keep motivation high, students will be creating a fantasy graphic story including all the elements of the genre. We have been studying several models in fantasy literature and we are excited to start planning our stories.

The students and teachers agree that building a magical world bedazzled with visually stunning details requires quality tools.

Additionally, having the proper tools in any creative endeavor brings excitement and professionalism to any task. Your donation will help make this project a reality and bring even more validity to this under-appreciated genre. In my years as a writing teacher I have seen how powerful having the right tools can be in advancing the writing process. More importantly, the visual aspect of this expressive form of story-telling provides access to all kinds of learners. This is a chance for all our students to shine!
