This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Kindergarten classroom is comprised of energetic, eager, and hardworking writers and readers ready to discover new books with their favorite characters and write stories that are meaningful to them!

My Kindergarten students have thrived as learners during reading and writing workshop, and are excited to take on an active role in their learning!

My students are in need of a high volume of mentor texts and leveled books to read in order to be successful in reading and writing workshop!

My Project

My students participate in reading and writing workshop everyday! We are in need of mentor texts for introductions to reading and writing workshop and exemplars of the three genres of writing we will work on over they year: narratives, information, and opinion. The narrative texts chosen will allow my students to see how authors zoom in on a small moment in life and write about it in a way that makes the story come alive for the reader! How-to mentor texts will provide exemplars for my students on how to create how-to books about things they know a all about. Opinion texts will help my students have an understanding of how their words are powerful tools that can bring about changes they want to see in the world.

At her opening keynote Lucy Calkins said, "Writing matters because words can change the world." These exemplars will serve as useful examples students can reference as they learn that they are writers!

In addition to mentor texts, we need lower leveled texts, levels A-F, that students can read independently during reading workshop! The reading workshop model illustrates how important it is that students have access to lots of text. These books will allow each student to check out ten or more books in their book box each week!
