My Students

I teach at a STEM Academy. Although we have a NEW focus on Science and Engineering, Reading is still an intricate part of our curriculum. I want to integrate English Language Arts and Science as much as possible, in order to increase student interest and engagement!

In my classroom, I have 25 students who are at varying levels in fluency, as well as comprehension.

They love reading about severe weather! Unfortunately, we are only in our 2nd year as a STEM Academy, and still have not built up our fictional text resources for science.

My Project

Our curriculum focus is on Earth, Physical, and Life Science project-based learning. Our Earth Science unit focuses on severe weather (i.e. hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, floods, etc.); however, we are lacking fiction books to provide children with a variety of texts. That is why I am requesting two different fictional texts: "Earthquake in the Early Morning" and "Blizzard of the Blue Moon."

Currently, the children only have non-fiction text resources to enrich our Earth Science Unit of Study on severe weather.

With more fiction books, such as "Earthquake in the Early Morning" and "Blizzard of the Blue Moon" they will be more prepared to take on various reading assessments throughout the academic year because they have been exposed to a variety of reading genres.
