My Students

Help get us started! This year I am creating a new fantasy class for seniors who are interested in wizards, fairy tales and magic. Unfortunately, we don't have many novels in the book room that fit that category and we could really use your help.

My students attend a very large high school, in an urban area in New York.

Our school is one of the last "big" schools and has an enrollment of over 2,000 students. They are a very diverse population and though they are mostly black and Hispanic, within those communities are students from North America, South America and Africa.

My Project

For the most part, my students are good kids who don't really understand the value of an education and have spent most of their young lives just getting by. Many do not have a real interest in learning and I want to change that with a new English curriculum built around the fantasy genre. It is geared towards seniors who will hopefully being going on to college. I want them to experience reading a genre they've really only experienced through film. Hopefully this will create in them an understanding that literature can be fun and interesting and they will take this with them to college and inspire them to go beyond just taking the required English classes and sign up for classes based on specific genres or topics.

This project can really make a big difference in these students' lives.

It can show them the value of all literature, not just the classics, and it can inspire them to read more unfamiliar genres. It can also inspire them to look at their areas of interest in terms of movies or video games and then find books that share those same areas of interest, increasing both the amount they read as well as the amount of enjoyment they will get out from it.
