Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students and I have been on a jazz journey to NOLA (New Orleans, LA). Using music videos, visual artifacts of famous jazz musicians, the thriving art scene there, brass and woodwind instruments, percussion sticks to teach rhythm, coordination and teamwork, and images to help them understand dynamics and tempo. We would gather on the carpet and do our lessons in jazz. We can't do that anymore.

The current carpet is soiled, stained and just plain worn out; we need a new carpet, and this new music carpet would be magical for them!

I teach in a Title I and Title III elementary school. Many of my students have autism or learning disabilities. Establishing routines helps them predict and meet expectations. When they come to the class, they know the password is 'Laissez bon temps rouler." There is joy, intimacy, and trust that develops when students are making music. Even at snack time, they request to hear Trombone Shorty playing St. James Infirmary at the White House or Jon Batiste's Freedom. I don't want to interrupt their routines. I don't want to stop the joy. I need a carpet.

This beautiful blue music-themed carpet with the treble cleft will promote creativity, reduce noise levels, and help all of the students in my school relax so they can think and focus on the arts. Research has found that the color blue can be soothing and calming, particularly to those with autism.
