My Students

My favorite quote is: Great teachers teach their students to build bridges, facilitate their crossing, then happily collapse those bridges and encourage them to build bridges of their own." -Chicken Soup for the Soul. Through the use of these materials I will be able to build and collapse bridges.

I am fortunate to teach thirteen students with disabilities.

They are delayed academically and have many challenging social issues. My students are eager to learn but face many challenges. Often times the only reading materials they have are those provided by the school. My school is a public school with a population of about five hundred students. My school is located in an improvise area where the majority of the students are below the poverty level. My goal is to increase their academic level and build their self esteem in the process. I have observed that many of them enjoy reading the outdated scholastic magazines I have in the classroom. When they have choice time they gather in small groups to read, discuss and view the pictures. I decided that I can use this form of genre to support their interest and increase their reading level. In addition my students all love science, so the Science Spin Magazines that are included with the Scholastic News Magazines will certainly be a hit.

My Project

To start the day I have my students complete an entry task of either reading or math. The Scholastic News Magazines integrated in this morning routine would be ideal to get their minds motivated. These magazines have short but interesting updated information with colorful eye grabbing pictures. The Scope Common Core Readers and the Biographies Scholastic News Nonfiction Readers will be additional resources for my guided reading as well as for homework or our class "Book in a Bag" activities. It is my goal through the use of these books to improve literacy in my classroom and increase my students reading ability in a fun and interesting manner. The above mentioned materials will also help to prepare my students to meet the challenge of the Common Core English Language Arts State Examination. The Science Spin magazines will be an updated addition to the science curriculum. It is my hope to foster my students interest in science by providing opportunities to engage in science reading.

I feel that these magazines and nonfiction biography readers will grab my students interest and motivate them to reading more.

Through the use of these materials I hope to increase their reading level, increase their vocabulary, and build their self esteem. An improvement in literacy skill will empower and motivate them to strive to learn more. It will mean for them promotion to the next grade as well as a sense of accomplishment.
