My Students

Imagine not being aware of what is going on in your country or the world. My students will become more well-rounded citizens if they are exposed to updated news through magazines written on their level.

My students are Fifth Graders at an urban school district.

I was their Fourth grade teacher last year. My students are always wanting to learn more, but unfortunately our resources are very limited. Our school has been labeled as a struggling school, but 1/3 of my students scored advanced on our state tests!

My Project

My students need nonfiction materials that integrate science and social studies. Magazines such as Weekly Reader News and Around the World will encourage my students to read more nonfiction text. The requested magazines will help my students decode nonfiction text. We currently don't have any science textbooks, so this would help supplement the content. My students will be able to think more critically after being exposed to current issues. Also, they will be excited to receive new magazines each week.

This project will promote critical thinking.

Also, it will stop the cycle of ignorance toward what is going on in our world. It will provide weekly support in social studies and science for my fabulous 5th graders!

Mrs. Newman Mastery Charter School - Pastorius Grades 3-5
