Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students face challenges each and every day. Some of them are English Language Learners, some are learning disabled and some just need an extra push. Wherever their needs may lie, they find their classroom as a safe haven full of possibilities and opportunities. And despite their personal challenges, they show up with a smile and expect to learn.

My students deserve resources that are relevant to their world and speak to their needs!

Their faces light up when they make connections to things they already know and have experienced. They love to share their stories and listen to each other's tales.

Their learning should connect to their life! There is a range of abilities and interests in my classroom and each student has the right to an education that is specific and respective to their needs.

My Project

My students will need access to reading material that is both fresh and engaging, as well as differentiated. Their discussion has been stifled and their resources have gone stale due to the Pandemic. Nonfiction reading is a huge component within the Common Core Standards and it is often the most difficult genre for students. But that is where the Scholastic Classroom Magazines come in- they will breathe new life into reading and learning!

Not only are these magazines engaging, they offer a supportive way to approach reading and foster meaningful connections in a difficult genre.

Reading nonfiction can be tough, but the Scholastic Magazines are full of high interest articles, text features and photographs that can help support comprehension. Students will also learn new perspectives, develop critical thinking and use evidence to support their ideas. They may even be inspired by what they read!

Many students are immediately turned off to nonfiction because it can look scary. But the beauty of the Scholastic Magazines is that they look less intimidating and offer different ways to engage with the text through the features like the headings, photos and sidebars. There are 3 different grade levels chosen as resources because that will be how the material is differentiated for each student's needs. They will make an excellent tool for small group instruction! In addition, when they are read at home, students will develop fluency by rereading them and even help their families by sharing the knowledge. What better dinner conversation is there than current events?
