My Students

We are the Chemists of Payneville. We will not help build the School to Prison Pipeline but we are groundbreaking in building the Chemistry to College pipeline.

My school is categorized as one of the lower performing schools in the county and in need of extra support and assistance for our students, who all experience high levels of poverty, violence and educational inequity.

The majority of my students will either be the first or in the first generation of their families to attend college. Statistically, only 27% of them will graduate college within four years (compared to 42% of students whose parents graduated from college). But not the Payneville Chemists, we all aspire to go to college.

My Project

As I am gaining more and more technology for my classroom (from great donors like you!), some of the older tools are starting to act up. I currently use an almost 6 year old laptop to prepare a lot of my school work and to use as a technology integration tool in the classroom. We need a new MacBook Pro! My district has launched a new digital citizenship initiative to help counteract the increasing number of cyber-bullying incidents in our county. Digital citizenship consists of behaviors, attitudes and actions that positively shape and impact digital content and communities. These habits include everything from proper online etiquette to the appropriate use of technology to maintaining privacy in the digital world.

My students in particular, do not often have a chance to use these kinds of online social tools due to lack of access, so it is imperative that they learn it at school.

By learning to use technology in the classroom, my students will develop skills essential for the 21st century. But more than that, they will learn the critical thinking and workplace skills they will need to be successful in their futures. Education is no longer just about learning and memorizing facts and figures; it’s about collaborating with others, developing different forms of communication and leadership skills.

I recently attended an annual technology conference and learned about how to integrate technology in order to provide differentiated instruction to all learners. This technology will require a lot of preparation that needs to be done on a laptop and not just a tablet. The students will also be using the laptop for some web based tools that require a little more typing. I am excited to put to use a lot of the new ideas I learned about at the conference!
