This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am always looking for fun new ways to engage my scholars in the learning process. Over the last few years, we are seeing our English Language Learner and immigrant population increase drastically. In my music class, we focus on building a sense of community and strengthening literacy and academics just as much as working collaboratively to improve across all content areas. This year, I want to take more of a deep dive into incorporating Orff instruments as part of the music curriculum. As we accumulate more instruments to our inventory, we need mallets to properly play! By reading music and different lyrics, creating their own songs with their own lyrics, and bridging the gap between what is being taught in their classrooms to the music room there is so much that can be done! With these instruments, students can combine their knowledge of ELA, music theory, and different musical elements such as reading rhythm, and notes, exploring different timbres, dynamics, and tempos while performing for their classmates, and the school, and building a sense of community where everyone belongs!

Who wouldn't have fun learning and playing different instruments with their friends through the universal language of music helping to bridge a literacy and language gap with our English Language Learners and immigrant population!

With more engaging and collaborative lessons, my scholars will better express themselves and further enjoy making music together!
