My Students

I have been given the opportunity to work in a Special Education classroom with the best group of 4th grade students! This year learning has been very different for all of us, but my 4th graders have continued adapt to the changes and challenges that have come with virtual learning.

While the virtual learning environment has posed some challenges for my students, they all have the resounding desire become better readers and reach their goals of reading near or at grade level.

I believe that the key to helping students achieve to their full potentials lies in engaging them in meaningful learning activities and giving them opportunities to access grade level content in different ways.

My Project

Lyrics2Learn is a brain-based, on-line reading program. This program allows students to address fluency, vocabulary, and open ended constructed response paragraphs at their grade level.

Music is used to engage students with text and help them memorize information quickly; as students retain more and more information due to the repetition, rhythm and rhyme, question levels increase.

Lyrics2Learn is broken up into four 15 minute daily lessons used to help students build fluency and background knowledge through choral and repeated reading and then apply what they have learned through leveled, interactive quizzes. Day One Literal Comprehension quizzes focus on literal concepts such as citing details, sequencing and following multi-step directions. Day Two Inferential comprehension quizzes focus on shallow inference and paraphrasing, focusing on concepts such as main idea, vocabulary, compare and contrast, and parts of a story. Day Three Complex Comprehension quizzes focus on complex concepts such as identifying significant events, figurative language, and character traits. Day Four focuses on a written response to extend students depth of learning.

Lyrics2Learn can be used in whole group instruction or students can log on and receive individual instruction and practice.
