My Project

My 4th-6th grade music classes will be working hard this year to understand the language arts behind the lyrics of music. We will be embracing world folk music and using it's timeless simplicity to ultimately inspire original compositions of our own, and I'll need a variety of instruments to motivate students and enhance the process.

Please give me some quality recorders, a solid ukulele that can handle students with disabilities, and two beautiful sets of hand drums to make the magic of language arts and lyrics happen in my classroom!

While instrumental music doesn't normally contain lyrics, the melodies beginners play on them are heavily influenced by folk music, and studying that folk music opens up a literary world filled with incredible stories and plenty of rhythm and rhyme. We'll learn, we'll sing, we'll play, and then we'll compose. Original compositions can be personally transforming and an incredible opportunity for students to "connect all the dots"! I just can't wait!
