My Project

Our school is a transfer high school. Students come to us with hidden strengths and talents. The introduction of chess in earlier grades seem to end around Junior High school. This hidden chess exposure needs more support with chess sets.

We currently have one chess set in the building.

An additional school set will allow us to support students to play, destress, during lunch in our library. Teens enjoy teaching each other to have fun during lunch and offer an alternative to cell phone use.

Chess can improve memory, focus, and planning skills. It can also help with problem-solving, pattern recognition, and spatial reasoning supporting all efforts across the school day. It can also help improve self-confidence and self-worth. Play can help youth learn how to win and lose gracefully, and it can make it easier to make friends and socialize. Playing chess can help young people get into a flow state, where they feel calm and composed, and are more likely to win. Chess can help teens to strengthen their self-control and stunt impulsive and emotional behavior.
