Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

One of the challenges I have found while teaching Social Studies to middle-schoolers at I.S. 61 in Corona, Queens is making history "real" for my students. One effective way I have found to do so is by assigning my students historical fiction novels. We use both print and audiobook formats. Books on CD make reading fun. My students love to listen and read along with the narrator. In fact, students come to listen and read books during their lunch period. In the spring, we will be studying World War II. To supplement the curriculum, I would like my "Lunchtime Book Club" to read "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry. Set in Nazi-era Denmark, this award-winning book vividly describes the German occupation and the experience of living under the Nazi regime. This novel will add a unique perspective that can not be found in any textbook. I would like to request a class set of "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry and a copy of the audiobook. Thank you for your generosity.
