My Project

Students with disabilities require support with basic skills, such as preparing, serving, and cleaning up after lunch. In my class there is diverse range of abilities. From the student that is practicing steps to making his own lunch to another preparing for a job at a bakery, each has great abilities and potential for growth. Our class has multiple opportunities to practice skills related to cooking, cleaning and prepping food, as the room has been retrofitted with a kitchen.

We have come to a point that the resources requested can substantially support the growing independence for each student.

For example, the student that heats his spaghetti each day can use his iPad to start the microwave, as he is unable to use enough pressure to press the button on the current microwave. The refrigerator will be used to help store beverages, stocked by a student, to serve staff a meal bi-weekly. The knives can help the student use the correct utensil to prepare food with the added support of color-coding. Each item is specifically chosen to help an individual meet his goals for becoming more able in the kitchen, whether it be for his daily lunch or preparing for a job in food service.
