My Project

These Lunar New Year books and seat cushions will be a great asset to our literacy program! They will be used to teach students about Lunar New Year while making connections with students and promoting diversity. Over a third of my students are English Language Learners with Spanish or Vietnamese as their primary language.

The characters in these books reflect the cultures and ethnicities of many of my third graders.

Culturally relevant books will allow my students to connect with real-life characters relatable to their own life and experiences. My students need books with topics that spark their interest and instill a love of reading. By introducing different authors and genres I can help my students discover new ideas, topics, and interests. Literacy is the key to success! The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. It will be fun to tie in the customs and traditions of having new things as we celebrate Lunar New Year with new floor cushions. My students and I will have flexible seating opportunities as we read and learn about Lunar New Year.
