This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a Math and Science teacher in Bronx, New York. For the past three years, our city and school communities have been hit and hurt by unexpected changes that forever altered our lifestyles and routines. Despite our best intentions and efforts to support our students, we continue to face challenges resulting from deepened learning gaps, limited socialization, and a reduced education budget.

I love my students' can-do attitudes toward academic barriers and taxing home circumstances.

Ninety-five percent of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and nearly 1/3 of them live in the NYC shelter system. This year, our school budget has been cut by the mayor by about 12%, which significantly affects our school community. We have to cut back on community service projects, operate fewer extracurricular activities, and rely more heavily on donations to purchase supplies.

For this project, we are requesting donations for classroom decorations for Lunar New Year. As an Asian American teacher who works in an urban school, I understand the importance of cultural diversity. In our traditions, kids receive red pocket money for the new year, and we would like to continue that tradition by requesting a variety of support materials ranging from stationery to Echo Dot as our virtual learning assistant to snacks for students to stress relief toys. Lunar New Year is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. When we carry out this project, we will conduct lessons on Lunar New Year and its cultural and historic significance.
